It is the lowest and thin portion of the sternum. It is in cartilaginous form in childhood but often its ossification gets complete in the adulthood and it gets connected with the body of sternum. Xiphoid process is not jointed to any rib or costal cartilages yet some ligaments and muscles are connected with it. The joint between the body and xiphoid process of sternum is called xiphisternal joint.
