  • Root of nail.
  • Body of nail.

The nail can be cut apart from dead part. It is called free edge. The root of nail is in the skin and covered with cuticle, due to which semi lunar area is being formed. It is called nail lunula. In addition to few frontier parts of nail, the rear part of it is live that remains thickened in nail bed on the epidermis. The wide part of the nail is called body. It is being grown from the ankurak layer of the epidermis and located on the nail bed and connected with skin. In the skin of nail bed, blood vessels and nerve fibers are present. The lateral section of nail root and body are covered with folds, called nail fold.

The structure of the cells of nail root is soft. They go on getting division, due to which their numbers go on increasing. The growing cells push the cells next to them forward. As well they grow outwards as go on becoming hard. In this way, the length of nail goes on increasing. The nutritive elements do not able to be reached to the last hard part of them, so they are died. This dead part can be separated easily after cutting.
