There is a popular proverb in Hindi concerning to millet and it is ‘balihari tu bajra, tere lambe pan, ghode ke par lag gaye aur budhe hue jawan.
Millet is grown all over India and it is interesting food for the hard workers. There is no need to ghee and oil with millet’s bread. Some people become the victim of constipation by its use, but where millet is general meal, its side effect has no importance. The inhabitants of such places eat its breads with gusto. Its bread is sweet for them. Millet is used to prepare millet-pudding, mixed heap, sukhali, rab and dhokli with buffalo milk. Mix ghee and jaggery in millet flour to prepare “kuler”. This special dish can not be prepared with other corns’ flour. The people cede kuler before snakes on an auspicious day named naagpanchmi (a festival). Hola is also prepared from millet.
Colour: It is brown.
Taste: It is sown in the fields and its plant is high and thin. Its leaves are long and thin. A spike appears on its head that contains several seeds of millet.
Structure: It is hot but according to some persons, it is cool and dry.
Precaution: Eating over quantity of millet increases the body weight. It takes time to digest and it is the source of flatulence.
Note: its breads (tikkaras) are suitable especially in the winter season and rainy season because of its hot nature. It is hot natured, so it should not be taken in the summer season. Millet should not be given to the patients of piles and constipation.
Comparison: Millet can be compared with rice.
It fattens the body and increases the sperm count. It is beneficial for liver. It creates dryness in the body and checks loose motions caused by heat. It increases the quantity of urine and kills the embryo in its early stage. Make a packet by taking a little millet and foment the affected part. It provides relief in the pain caused by winter. Its use reduces the pain of piles. Mix millet in vinegar to prepare a paste. Applying this paste on the affected parts reduces swelling caused by cold in winter season. It is purgative and hot. It brings the mucous and phlegm out.
Useful in different diseases:
Stomachache: Eating millet increases the milk in the breast of a mother. Newborn baby does not suffer from stomach pain after its use.
Wounds on horse back: Burn old spikes of millet and mix water in this ash. Application of this mixture on the wounds of horse back proves very beneficial.
Heart: It is useful for the heart. It provides body strength but takes time in digestion. It enhances the digestion power and checks bile disorders. It reduces the warmth and increases the sexual desire in women. It makes stool hard and causes constipation. It is considered that millet also makes the sperm hot.
Belching: Taking equal amount of jiggery, asafetida or banana with millet checks belching.
Cholera: Mix ground dry ginger and ground rock salt in millet’s flour. Rubbing this mixture on the body reduces excessive sweating.
