Metacarpal bones

Metacarpal bones

These are the five bones of the palm which are the small form of long and big bones. Like other long bones, these bones have shaft, head and base. They are counted from the lateral side (from the thumb side) viz the first bone of thumb and the fifth metacarpal bone of the smallest bone. Their proximal ends are connected with carpal bones and distal ends are connected to phalanges. The joint between the metacarpal bones and phalanges is called metacarpophalangeal joint. The ends of metacarpal bones make the knuckles of the fingers which can be felt from outside.
