FOOD AND WATER


Introduction:

        There is a close relation between food and water. Generally, all people drink water while taking meal but drinking no water after half or one hour of having meal is beneficial. Drinking no water at the time of taking meal is good for digestion system. Digestive juices digest the meal taken by a person easily and quickly in the absence of water viz when a person does not drink water at this time. When water is drunk after half or one hour of taking meal, that juice mixes in the water and reaches in all the body parts through arteries.     

      But drinking water while taking meal depends on the type of meal. If the meal is simple, drinking no water at this time is beneficial. But when the meal is spicy, pungent, salty and sour, drinking water becomes necessary because of this meal there is an excitement in the gland which sustains the humidity inside the body and for satisfying it water becomes necessary. Drinking no water while taking such type of meal can be harmful for the body. One feels thirst by the use of such foodstuffs and there is need of water to calm the heat of the meal. On the contrary, if the meal is simple and natural and it is taken by chewing properly, there is no need of drinking water in this case.

      Don’t drink much water in case of thirst after eating spicy and pungent meals because the digestion of meal will become disturbed by doing so. In this condition, the digestive juice is not able in dissolving in the meal properly and the digestion system becomes disturbed. A person becomes the victim of constipation, indigestion and other stomach diseases. drink water according to need after the use of such meals. Drink a little water while taking meals which is spicy, salty and pungent. Drinking water keeps a person away from many problems related to stomach.  

Saints have preached about drinking water at the time of having meal-

                     Atyambu-panannan vipchyatenam nirmbu-panach sa avam doshah

Tamannro banihaviv-dhanray muhumurvari vived bhuri

They described that if there is a need of drinking water if one feels dryness while eating meal, they can drink milk, whey,curd in place of water in this case. Doing so is much beneficial. 

It has been written about drinking water while taking meal-

                Bhukta-shyado jalam peetam karshya mandagni dosh krit

Here it means to say that weakness and indigestion originate in the body if one drinks water while taking meal-

Aadavante visham vaari madhyeyasratomam

Here it means to say that drinking water before or after having meal is like a poison-

Special:

        There can be one more cause of drinking no water at the time of taking meal. We know that the meal what we take has two third water. So we should drink a little water while taking meal but water should not be given up completely. There is a lack in the origin of digestive juice and there will be a difficulty in chewing meal and one will become habitual of swallowing meal without chewing properly. This thing can be harmful for the body. Time of drinking water while taking meal should be different. Thus, people make a habit of drinking no water at the time taking meal. But for it the meal should be simple and natural.  

Scientists’ opinion about water and meal:

        European scientist made several researches in the matter of drinking water and they proved that drinking water just after taking meal is harmful and drinking water after half or one hour of taking meal is beneficial. Drinking two glasses of water after two hours is beneficial. A person who drinks water after one or two hours never falls ill in his life. The habit of drinking no water at the time of taking meal is appropriate if the meal is simple and natural. To avoid of the habit of drinking no water, one can drink water before one or half hour of taking meal and the water can be drunk after one hour of having meal.

Tirshitastu bhavedurlmi kshudhi tastu jalodari

        It has been written about ayurveda that giving meal in place of water in case of thirst is harmful. Such person can become the victim of gastritis or he can be come the victim of dropsy. So drinking water in case of thirst is beneficial for the body.
